In a recent official decree, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Mehdi Esmaeili has appointed Mohammad Khazaei, the Director of Iran’s Cinema Organization (ICO), as the Secretary of the 43rd Fajr International Film Festival, while retaining his current position. This appointment underscores Khazaei's ongoing role in shaping Iran's cinematic landscape.
The minister's letter to Khazaei highlighted the significant challenges and opportunities facing Iranian cinema. Esmaeili emphasized that the upcoming Fajr Festival, which will coincide with celebrations marking the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, demands both qualitative and quantitative advancements in the industry. He commended Khazaei for his expertise, dedication, and valuable experience in organizing various film festivals, which were key factors in his reappointment.
The minister’s decree read: “Mr. Mohammad Khazaei, esteemed Deputy Minister and Head of the Iranian Cinema Organization and Audiovisual Affairs, Iranian cinema faced unique yet hopeful circumstances over the past year. As we approach the 43rd Fajr International Film Festival, which will align with the Islamic Revolution’s victory celebrations, there is a pressing need for a leap in both the quality and quantity of cinematic productions. Therefore, given your specialized knowledge, commitment, and valuable experience in festival organization, you are appointed as Secretary of the 43rd Fajr International Film Festival while maintaining your role as Head of the Iranian Cinema Organization and Audiovisual Affairs. It is expected that, with the help of God and your prudent management, we will witness a festival worthy of Iranian cinema and the standards of the Islamic Revolution.”
The minister also expressed gratitude for the diligent efforts of the previous festival secretaries, Mostafa Aminian, who served during the 41st and 42nd editions of the festival.
Khazaei’s appointment as Secretary of the Fajr Festival is anticipated to bring a renewed focus and innovation to Iran’s premier film event. His continued leadership reflects the government's confidence in his ability to enhance the festival's prestige and its alignment with national cultural values.
